Natural Eye Allergy Relief

natural eye allergy reliefIn its manifestation, an eye allergy is a case of allergic conjunctivitis. Usually treated with medications, there are many natural eye allergy relief  options for those suffering from seasonal or other types of eye  allergies.

Allergic conjunctivitis may be caused by a number of indoors or  outdoors allergens – pollen, dust, pet hair, cigarette smoke and so on. When these allergens come into contact with the eyes they cause adverse reactions of  the outer lining of the eye and the inner lining of the eyelids. It may affect virtually  anyone and produces a number of dreadful symptoms – runny nose, sneezing,  coughing, watery eyes, itchiness and/or burning sensation in the eyes, increased  sensitivity to light and blurry vision.

Usually, allergic conjunctivitis is treated with antihistamine medications. While these treatments offer very good allergy control, they also
have adverse effects on tear quantity and quality and thus may lead to worsening of the eye allergy symptoms.

  • Reduce  the time you wear contact lenses; you may also consider switching to prescription eyeglasses until your eye allergy subsides.
  • Don’t touch or rub your eyes, especially if your hands are not clean.
  • Avoid wearing eye make up.
  • Keep your bed and surroundings free of dust and other allergens.
  • Apply warm compresses of black or chamomile tea. The easiest way to make a warm herbal compress is to soak black or chamomile tea bags in warm water and place them over your eyes for about 10 minutes.
  • Rose water offers good eye allergy relief too as it can help eye irritation and swelling. Soak 2 cotton balls in pure rose water and place them over your eyes for 10 minutes.
  • Boil fennel seeds in water for a few minutes, strain the solution and let it cool. Use it to wash your eyes several times a day.
  • Include more fresh fruits and vegetables to your daily menu and cut back the consumption of sweet foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables such as spinach, kale, carrots, mango and citrus fruits contain essential nutrients that help allergic conjunctivitis symptoms. On the other hand candies, chocolate, cakes, puddings and other sweets tend to worsen eye allergy symptoms.
  • Drink plenty of liquids and protect your eyes from bright sunlight.
